ATTRACTION - BODY LANGUAGE

Anne Greene here.

Want some tips on how to show your characters are attracted to one another? I wish I’d known these things when I was dating.

You’ve all heard of bedroom eyes. When a person is excited their pupils dilate up to four times their original size. The pupils of both men and women dilate when they are attracted. The eyes are key signals in courtship. That’s why women use eye makeup to emphasize their eyes. Romantic encounters are more successful in dimly lit places because everyone’s pupils dilate and create the impression couples are attracted to one another.

When lovers look deep into one another’s eyes the dilation they see further attracts them. Both men and women easily decode eye signals. Whenever a person sees something he likes, his pupils dilate. That’s why poker players wear dark glasses.

When a person is angry the pupils contract. You can use this in romantic scenes as well.

The eyebrow flash. The eyebrows rise rapidly and then drop again. This is an invitational greeting. Opposites respond without knowing why. People eyebrow flash people they like and want to like them. Lowering the eyebrows shows dominance or aggression and raising the eyebrows shows attraction.

Eye Widening. Women widen their eyes by raising their brows and eyelids. This has a powerful effect on men and gives them the desire to protect and defend the females. We all use looking at and glancing at and gazing at the opposite sex too often in our books. Try using the eyebrow flash and the eye widening instead.

Looking Up. Women tilt their chin down and look up use this beautiful gesture that appeals to men because it makes the eyes larger. Princess Diana used the down-tilting head and looking-up gesture that made her well-loved. This also exposes the lovely neck.

Lower The eyelids. Marilyn Monroe mastered this expression and made herself the darling of the movies. Lower the eyelids while raising the eyebrows, held tilted up, and lips slightly parted  make most men weak in the knees.

Intimate Gazing. When a man likes a woman, he will look at her at lot. When she sees him gazing, she will like him. When a woman wants to grab a man’s attention across a room, she will meet his gaze, hold it for three seconds, then look away and down. This sends him a message of interest. But most men miss that first look, so a woman must repeat that look three times before the man gets the message. When she finally gets his attention, she gives him the eyebrow flash.

The come-on look. Men recognize this look as an invitation. She gives him a sideways glance with dilated pupils and goes into intimate gazing. Women are expert at sending and receiving this gaze, but men are not. When men use the Intimate Gaze the look is blatantly obvious to women. But when women give the come-on look, most men are unaware. Think how funny a situation that creates.

Let me hear your story. Did any of these gestures work for you when you dated?
